created by: Allegra Licci & Farhan Kamdar
Logline
Emily Piorkowski is a middling hotel critic, fulfilled in her career but not her social life. Each episode steps into her stays at motels, bed-and-breakfasts, and suites; experiencing the reviews in her eyes.
Emily Piorkowsi (40s)
In a world that determines success in many restrictive and demanding ways, Emily finds joy in her work despite what’s expected of a woman her age. Though her career is both static and transient, Emily’s stability comes from herself. With an unapologetic disposition and self-confidence in her lifestyle, she remains present in her process and enters each room excited to engage with her surroundings.
OVERVIEW
The Hotel Critic is a 6 episode dramatic web series with comedic undertones. Each episode is 6-10 minutes and takes place in a different hotel room. The show will be accompanied by real world blog and social media posts from our protagonist to blur the lines between reality and fiction for our audience and immerse them into the world of the show.
THEME
Success is defined by your values, even if they don’t “measure up”.
from the directors:
We’ve worked together for years on short and feature films, and are excited to apply our collaborative skills to this episodic project.
“The Hotel Critic” came from Allegra’s history growing up in hospitality, surrounded by hotels. We wanted an outlet in which we could take a character and place her in different scenarios that are diverse enough to warrant their own exploration. Farhan’s interest lies within the social media landscape, which has changed the way that people engage with the world. In the last decade, online interaction has evolved so that gaining an audience has become easier than ever. Films and series have turned into conversations with the people who enjoy them.
Combining these with our interest in exploring solitude and isolation in adulthood brought us to creating this series. For some people, being alone is good. What happens when someone who seems to be struggling with their loneliness is actually content with their life as is? In each episode, we introduce a new way for Emily, our protagonist, to navigate this contradiction in a way that reveals more about her relationship with herself and her surroundings.
Sincerely,
